The entire megohm test is non-destructive.
What happens is the dc voltage is applied to the device or the winding.
This is an insulation test that the insulation has been short-circuited in any way.
In my megohm, there are 3 ranges of 300V, 750V, 1000 volts.
Use appropriate voltage to not damage the equipment you are testing is essential.
The working voltage is as high as 240 volts and should be used in 300 range.
The working voltage can reach up to 600 volts with a range of 750 volts, with a working voltage of over 600 and a range of 1,000 volts.
As you can see, if you're using a device that has a working voltage of 1000 volts and says, 24 volts, just testing it, you can break the insulation.
So the megohm test equipment is not destructive.
